Chevrolet Camaro–The muscle car still has it

2010-Chevrolet-Camaro With production underway, the new 2010 Chevrolet Camaro will soon be racing to dealers and shortly there after be thundering down America’s streets. While we have not yet been able to purchase a production model for testing, we have had seat time in this reborn performance classic.

This week, I drove a new Camaro SS on some of the rural roads surrounding our Connecticut test track, and I came away impressed. During my drive, the Camaro even passed one test not included in our rigorous test program of more than 50 separate evaluations and thousands of miles of driving - but more on that in a bit.

I was a kid when the 1969 Camaro first appeared on the streets –the model year said to provide inspiration for the new one. The ‘69 struck a chord in my young gearhead mind at the time, and I remember bicycling to the local dealership to get a better look. Full disclosure: The ’69 Camaro has been something of a favorite since. (Make mine an RS/SS convertible, please, with a 350/350 and four speed. Color is negotiable.)

The new Camaro does take some styling cues from the ’69, and even has similar rectangular gauges on the console. Thankfully, however, it does without the houndstooth upholstery that was offered to the Woodstock generation back in the day.  -More-

New Chevrolet Camaro Enters the Muscle Car Competition

GM will start building the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro today at its Oshawa Car Assembly plant in Canada. When the Camaro rolls off the assembly line, it will join its rivals, the Dodge Challenger and Ford Mustang, in a three-way muscle car competition.

The three vehicles haven’t been sold at the same time as new models since 1974. Chevrolet says it has already sold 14,000 of the fifth-generation muscle car, reports the Detroit News. The Camaro was discontinued in 2002 and reintroduced as a concept vehicle in 2006 at the Detroit auto show.

Ford will launch redesigned 2010 Mustangs from its assembly plant in Flat Rock later this month, and Dodge will introduce new retro colors such as B-5 blue for Challengers built at the Brampton Assembly Plant in Ontario. -More-

Pony up! Ford 2009 Mustang is one macho muscle car - even the base model

Tuesday, March 24th 2009, 4:00 AM

On a clear day, even a cloudy one, you can see that the 2009 Ford Mustang pays homage to others through the line’s 45-year history. There are the round headlights and the oversized red taillights. The grille leans forward as if it’s leading the car aggressively up the road, which it is.

The Mustang, in certain forms like the special-edition Bullitt and Shelby GT500 (the latter with a 500-hp V8 engine), remains a true muscle car. Even in more subdued forms, like the Base and GT trims, with a 210-hp V6 engine and 300-hp V8, respectively, the Mustang coupes and convertibles still fit a certain macho image. And now, the new softener: a panoramic glass roof. -More-
